God’s Nearness in Loneliness

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

Loneliness can feel like an empty room, quiet and echoing. It shows up in seasons we expect and seasons we don’t: after loss, during transitions or in a crowded room.

God does not step back when we feel alone. He steps closer. When the psalmist says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted, he’s describing a God who draws near with tenderness, presence, and steady companionship.

Loneliness becomes a doorway, not a dead end. It becomes a place where God meets us with a kind of intimacy we might not have noticed in busier seasons. In the quiet, His voice becomes clearer. In the stillness, His comfort becomes more real. In the ache, His love becomes more personal.

You are not walking through this valley alone. The God who sees you, knows you, and delights in you is closer than your breath. Even when you cannot feel Him, He is holding you with a nearness that does not waver.

A Gentle Practice

Find a quiet moment today. Place your hand over your heart and breathe slowly. Whisper this truth aloud:

“God, You are near to me right now.”   Let that truth settle into the places that feel empty.

God, thank You that loneliness is not a sign of Your absence but an invitation to experience Your nearness. Draw close to my heart today. Fill the quiet places with Your peace, Your companionship, and Your steady love. Help me sense Your presence and trust that I am never alone. Amen.
